Teardown notes

The one-liner

A free Skool hub where fat-bike riders swap setups, trail reports and riding partners.

What they actually sell

Fat-bike Lab, run by Greg Smith, lives on Skool. Its public pitch: "Fat-bike Lab is the free hub for fat-bike riders to share trail intel, gear tweaks and riding buddies." A free tier sits at the front door, with Premium upgrades above it. Members share their setups for feedback, post trail reports so others know what is rideable, ask gear questions and find people to ride with. A weekly check-in asks what everyone is riding, wrenching or wondering about. The page openly says a Lab Pro tier with live events, challenges and exclusive content is coming but not live yet, and asks members to contribute rather than scroll. Inside sit 3 courses. A formal money-back promise is not spelled out on the about page.

Who pays and why

Fat-bike riders tired of guessing on gear, hunting for trail conditions or riding alone. They want straight answers from people who actually ride the same bikes. They join for setup feedback, trail reports, gear answers and a weekly check-in.

Where the members come from

It is the back end of an existing audience. The crew behind fat-bike.com, running since 2011, the Weekly Dose of Fat newsletter and the Micro Dose podcast built it, so readers and listeners are the obvious feeder.

What's holding it back

The paid tier is announced but not built, so for now there is no income and no reason beyond goodwill for heavy contributors to keep posting.

Steal this

Announce your future paid tier as a direction rather than a product, so early members feel part of shaping it.

Would this work in another niche?

Yes for any gear-heavy niche sport, such as packrafting or bikepacking. Weak where gear is simple.
